Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Maine invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry, to begin September 1, 2012. This position is a one-year, fixed-length term appointment.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibility will be teaching courses in the sophomore organic chemistry sequence plus a course in general chemistry or an upper division course in a specialty area. Other duties may include curriculum development, student advising , and mentoring of undergraduate research.
Requirements: A Ph.D. in organic chemistry by date of hire and demonstrated prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level are required. Applicants who have a record of excellence in teaching and experience are preferred. Individuals on sabbatical leave are welcome to apply.

Director of Marketing Communications

As part of a dynamic, new strategic planning initiative, The Blue Sky Project, the University of Maine invites applications for the position of Director of Marketing Communications within the Division of Marketing and Communications. This Director will report directly to the President through the Senior Advisor to the President.
About the Position
Under the general direction of the Senior Advisor to the President and in collaboration with the Senior Director of Public Relations and Operations, the Director of Marketing Communications will develop and manage a new university marketing, branding and communications plan utilizing innovative, cutting-edge strategies. The position plans and executes internal and external communications; oversees admissions communications as approved by the Vice President for Enrollment Management, works with the Office of Development regarding fundraising communications; collaborates on distribution and impact of the flagship magazine, UMaine Today, and provides design, editorial, and other communications services for a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the campus and the broader community. The Director will be responsible for implementing a university-wide integrated marketing and communications plan, including directly creating and editing various publications and other written materials to coordinating related departmental work product, that will positively impact the University’s mission, goals, strategic objectives, and constituency relations in alignment with the University of Maine Blue Sky Plan. In addition, the Director will advise campus leadership on innovative communications and build working partnerships with campus leaders and stakeholders including the Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Vice President for Development, college deans, faculty members, and the broader community.
Key Responsibilities for the Position Include:
- In collaboration with the Senior Director of Public Relations and Operations, manage, supervise and coordinate departmental work activities related to marketing, branding, and communications.
- Create and edit various publications or other written material related to Admissions, the Office of Development and UMaine Today.
- As approved by the Office of the President through the Senior Advisor to the President, develop, implement, and measure results from an innovative, cutting-edge marketing and branding strategy that effectively positions, and provides visibility for, the University of Maine, including print.
- Regularly meet and strategize with the Vice President for Enrollment Management (VPEM) and Admissions staff to determine the responsibilities of each area in executing the UMaine enrollment management strategy. Once the responsibilities are determined, provide the VPEM with appropriate production timelines, work product, and updates/feedback regarding duties to adjust accordingly.
- Advise campus leadership on innovative communications, consistent with UMaine marketing, branding and communications strategis, and build working partnerships with campus leaders and stakeholders including the VPEM, college deans, faculty members, and the broader community.
- Attend Marketing and Communications management team meetings and provide detailed UMaine marketing, branding and communications strategic planning updates/reports to the Senior Advisor to the President and external marketing parties contracting with UMaine.
- Supervise Marketing and Communications professional staff. Duties to include making hiring/termination/promotion recommendations, approval of leave time, conducting the performance appraisal and responding to grievances at the first step.
- Complete various duties related to departmental personnel and budget responsibilites.
Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, an advanced degree is preferred. Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications and branding is required. The ideal candidate will be a part of team that develops and implements innovative marketing, branding and communication strategies that utilize print, digital and web services. Experience working in higher education and with the community is preferred.

Learning Specialist

Responsibilities: provide intensive, essential learning strategies for student-athletes diagnosed with education impacting disabilities including attention deficit disorder and/or learning disability(s) in consultation with Disability Support Services; conduct academic needs assessments; assist in coordination and use of available accommodations; develop and implement learning intervention program for study skill; counsel and monitor progress of student-athletes in meeting the requirements for satisfactory academic progress and athletic academic eligibility consistent with both University policies and NCAA rules;
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:
Typically has the education associated with a Master’s degree in education, special education, athletic academic counseling, sport psychology or psychology, guidance, counseling or other related field and 3-5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience with and solid working knowledge of ADA regulations and laws in working with at-risk students and those with education impacting disabilities required. Expertise in the use of effective learning strategies, assessment instruments and ability to provide individualized plans based on the results required. Proficiency to interact effectively and develop positive relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds required. A working knowledge of NCAA regulations and academic eligibility requirements is preferred, demonstrated commitment to the adherence of the University’s and NCAA’s regulations relating to student athletes are required. Demonstrated aptitude to prioritize work, collaborate proactively with staff, while maintaining a productive work level even during periods of high pressure is required. Excellent organizational, communication, computer and interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated successful experience in counseling and providing academic support for college students with an understanding of collegiate athletics and the demands of student-athletes is preferred. Proposed salary range: $28,912-$35,500.

Lecturer in Molecular and Biomedical Sciences

The University of Maine Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences seeks applicants for a full-time, academic-year on-going Lecturer position to begin September 1, 2012.

The Information Technology Services (ITS) Department of the University of Maine System is seeking individuals to fill two Network Engineer I positions. These full-time regular positions, which are contingent on external funding, support all voice, video and data communications for the Maine School and Library Network (MSLN), and Maine’s Research and Education Network (MaineREN). Responsibilities include all activities in the design, installation, maintenance, and configuration of voice, video and data equipment and software. Incumbents in the Network Engineer I position also research and conduct assigned projects involving emerging technologies in these areas. Network Engineer I’s interface with all offices of the University and perform functions independently under general directions.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelors degree in a technical field, or three to five years of technical education and or experience with data networking and communications
• Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
• Knowledge of and experience with the operation of data networks and associated transports/protocols
• Understanding of voice and video technologies transmitted over data networks including protocols and standards
• Experience with Windows, Mac and Linux operating Systems
• Fundamental understanding of network security

The University of Maine System is seeking to fill the position of Administrative Specialist. Located in downtown Bangor, the Administrative Specialist serves as the first contact for visitors and callers to the University of Maine System Office, including meeting attendees, the general public, public officials, members of the Board of Trustees and University Presidents. The employee coordinates and facilitates activities and services at the System Office, including scheduling of space, maintaining vendor relationships, printing checks, and providing information to staff and visitors. The University of Maine System is seeking to fill a position as Staff Associate in the Shared Processing Center located in Orono at the University of Maine. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide administrative, professional, budgetary and operational support to the Director of the Shared Processing Center Operations, the Manager for Loan Processing and Receivables Management, and the Special Case Admissions Review committee (SCAR). Experience with a wide range of technology needed as is strong interpersonal and excellent communication and organization skills. Working knowledge of budget administration required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree and experience in higher education preferred as are PeopleSoft and Document Imaging experience.

Assistant Professor of Nature-based Tourism

The School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine is seeking applications for an academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Nature-based Tourism. The position will be 60% teaching and 40% research. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities:
Teaching – The successful candidate is required to 1) teach 12 credit hours with two undergraduate courses in the Fall semester and two undergraduate courses in the Spring semester. The courses include Park Systems of the World (SFR150); Introduction to Tourism (SFR 151); Sustainable Tourism Development (SFR 224); and Private and Commercial Recreation (SFR 436), 2) develop graduate course offerings in his/her field of expertise, and 3) serve as advisor to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Research – The successful candidate will be required to create a nationally recognized, externally funded research program that advances knowledge about nature-based tourism in forested environments. Research efforts may be national or international in scope, but emphasis must be placed on tourism and natural resources of Maine, with a focus on tourism opportunities in managed forestlands. The successful candidate will be required to lead and be part of interdisciplinary research teams addressing the opportunities, economics, policy, techniques, and approaches to nature-based tourism in Maine, obtain extramural funding, and publish in refereed journals.
Service – While University of Maine faculty do not have a formal portion of their time dedicated to service activities, the successful candidate will be expected to pursue informal extension and public service activities, such as interacting with Cooperative Extension staff and government agency personnel, providing assistance to industrial and non-industrial landowners, and serving on campus committees and professional organizations. Teaching, research, and service responsibilities are to be consistent with the University’s tri-partite Land Grant mission.
Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. with at least one degree in forestry, natural resources management, park management, or nature-based tourism is required by date of hire. Candidates with a B.S. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and graduate studies/experience in tourism businesses, tourism planning, or tourism management are preferred. Prior teaching experience and field experience is desirable. Previous work in nature-based tourism and communities in nature-based tourism settings is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success in obtaining extramural research funding, publishing in leading peer-reviewed journals, and delivering effective classroom instruction. Ability to effectively communicate with students and professional colleagues is essential. Applicants must be eligible to accept employment in the United States at the time the appointment is made.

The Higher Education Program at the University of Maine seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow for a one-year position (with the possibility of two years) involving teaching, research, and service responsibilities beginning in September 2012. The projected hiring salary range for this position is $42,000-$50,000 annually.
The Higher Education (HED) graduate programs include the Ph.D. in Higher Education, which prepares mid-career professionals for programmatic and institutional leadership roles or faculty roles, and the Master’s in Student Development in Higher Education, which prepares entry level professionals for work in student affairs in postsecondary institutions. The UMaine Career Center, a department within the Division of Student Affairs, is seeking a Career Counselor. Reporting to the Director, the Career Counselor is responsible for career planning services, including individual career counseling for undergraduates and graduates in various stages of the career planning process. Other primary responsibilities include delivery of career development workshops, seminars, programs and academic classes; providing oversight and management of the Career Resource Library; and coordinating the development and promotion of internship opportunities for students. This is a professional, full-time, 10-month position (September-June) and includes a full benefits package.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Provide career counseling and job search counseling to undergraduate and graduate students and alumni. Provide career testing and interpretation using formal and informal instruments.
•Develop, implement, manage and deliver career development programs, including planning, marketing and evaluating these programs. This includes workshops, seminars, class presentations, special programs and other career-related events.
•Manage the Career Resource Library, including evaluation and recommendation of resources to add to the library or link to the Career Center website. Plan for future resource needs and negotiate contacts on leases and subscriptions.
•Serve as the Career Center liaison for students, faculty and administrators in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Explorations, Foundations, First and Second Year programs and seminars in all colleges, the Academic Recovery Program, Residence Life and student organizations. Work collaboratively with these units to customize and deliver career exploration and career planning programs for these students.
•Provide support and programs for students focused on graduate and professional school preparation and opportunities.
•Coordinate and oversee the development and promotion of internship opportunities for students.
•Create and manage the execution of a comprehensive social media outreach strategy.
•Assist Director with training and supervision of undergraduate Career Assistants and graduate student interns.
•Support the employer relations team on specific employer-focused projects including on campus employer events and Maine Mentor Program activities.
•Keep current with career development issues and trends and disseminate information to staff and students. Represent the University of Maine by participating in professional associations.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:
•Typically has the education associated with a Master’s in counseling, student development or related area and experience as a career counselor at the college level and completion of supervised counseling practicum or an equivalent combination of education and experience required;
•Knowledge and use of career information and assessments and teaching experience strongly preferred.
•Excellent communication, public speaking, interpersonal and organizational skills required. Must work well as part of team and independently.

The School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine is seeking applications for an academic-year, Lecturer position in nature-based tourism. Teaching – The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) teach 12 credit hours with two undergraduate courses in the Fall semester and two undergraduate courses in the Spring semester. Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. (or ABD) with at least one degree in forestry, natural resources management, park management, or nature-based tourism is required by date of hire. Candidates with a B.S. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and graduate studies/experience in tourism businesses, tourism planning, or tourism management are preferred. Prior teaching experience and field experience is required. Previous work in nature-based tourism and communities in nature-based tourism settings is required. The Center, an 87,000 ft² laboratory with a world leading team of over 120 faculty, staff and students, conducts research with a variety of public and private entities developing the next generation of low-cost high-performance composite materials.
The successful candidate will create partnerships that promote investment in innovation, which will extend the impact of the University of Maine’s research in deep water offshore wind technology. This position will generate new R&D projects and create opportunities leading to the commercialization of the University’s intellectual property by managing the business operations required to develop innovations into marketable products and services.
Qualifications: Experience serving in offshore energy or wind energy industries as a business or technical lead with experience in the product development process and/or manufacturing and an established and growing network with key contacts in related wind energy industries are required. In addition, a MBA or equivalent education and experience in R&D marketing, business development, investment, marketing or law is required. An engineering or physics degree is preferred or demonstrated technical knowledge and aptitude. Demonstrated project management abilities are required. Expertise in aerodynamics and wind power engineering is preferred. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication and networking skills, ability to interact effectively in both academic and corporate environments and an ability to think creatively and translate ideas into action are also required.

Assistant Professor – Native American Studies

Native American Programs at the University of Maine invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in Native American Studies with a primary focus on research and outreach with Wabanaki Tribal Nations in Maine – Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Houlton Band of Maliseets and Aroostook Band of Micmacs. While the field of study is open, preference will be given to applicants from the fields of history, anthropology, and education. The successful candidate will be required to generate external research funding in cooperation with other Native American Programs personnel and UMaine faculty as well as to teach at least one course a year in Native American Studies that focuses on Wabanaki peoples. The candidate will also be required to work with the Coordinator of Native American Research to develop research protocols with the Tribal Nations of Maine. A Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required by the time of appointment and the candidate should show promise of excellence in scholarship along with a demonstrated commitment of outreach to Native American communities. TITLE: Assistant Professor of Human Nutrition
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (http://www.fsn.umaine.edu) has undergraduate concentrations in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Food Science and Food Management, as well as MS and PhD programs and a dietetic internship program. Faculty in the department collaborate with other campus units in addition to numerous national and international institutions to enhance teaching and conduct high quality research. The University of Maine is the state’s land-grant and sea-grant University and the flagship campus of the University of Maine system. RANK: Assistant Professor, full-time tenure track 9-month appointment, 50%research and 50% teaching appointment.

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate in Nutrition or closely-related field; RD desirable. Documented experience in Nutrition Science as related to prevention or treatment of nutrition-related disorders. Research area focus in Nutritional Biochemistry/Nutrigenomics or Nutritional Epidemiology is desirable. Postgraduate research experience with external funding preferred. Excellent teaching and communication skills are expected.
DUTIES: The faculty member will be expected to teach an undergraduate course in nutritional biochemistry, other undergraduate courses as needed, develop relevant graduate courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students, direct research, and serve on committees, panels and boards, as required. The appointee is also expected to develop an active research program by building a robust, externally-funded research program and creating collaborations within the Department, across campus and with other institutions both national and international.

Assistant Professor – Food Processing

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Maine: Invites applications for a tenure-track position in food processing at the Assistant Professor level, with appointment to begin September 1, 2012. Applicants must hold a doctorate in food science and/or technology or a closely related field at the time of appointment and demonstrate evidence of outstanding research, grant writing, and teaching potential. The academic-year position is 50% teaching and 50% research. As a core faculty member in a highly-visible, IFT-approved program, the successful applicant is required to have a strong background in food processing, in addition to exceptional communication and computer skills. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate introduction to food science, food processing laboratory, food engineering principles, field experience and graduate courses including food preservation. Advising of undergraduate and graduate students is expected. Area of processing research specialization is open but Maine’s largest food industries are fruit, vegetable and seafood processing. Grain, meat and beverage processing are also increasing within the state. Research collaboration with other faculty within the Department and in other disciplines on and off campus is encouraged. A key scholarship responsibility of this faculty member will be service as the food processing authority for the state by testing several hundred food samples and reviewing processing procedures annually. The faculty member will approve processes for acid and acidified foods for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources as part of their licensing procedure for food processors. A dedicated laboratory, in addition to a research laboratory, and a full-time research associate, will be provided to conduct these reviews.
