Administrative Associate

Full-time, regular position, 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Daily work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. -  4: 30 p.m. with occasional overtime and holiday work required.  Employee is responsible and accountable for the data entry and management of new Merit Scholarships. Employee communicates/negotiates with parents, students and guidance counselors both verbally and in writing regarding the Merit Scholarship process. Employee manages and oversees the renewal process for continuing scholarship recipients and the appeal process over the loss of the scholarship. Employee oversees the Admissions/Athletic visit approval process, assigns work to staff and communicates decision to Athletic Compliance Office. Employee manages the inventory of all printed materials and mailing supplies. Employee oversees/implements the communication plans for prospective students and assists with recruiting events. Employee supervises four (4) other classified employees. Employee approves payroll for students and classified employees. Employee hires, supervises, schedules and assigns for student workers. Employee communicates frequently with students, faculty, staff and the general public both verbally and in writing on matters relating to official University records and office operations. Employee resolves problems and responds to non-routine inquires relating to official University records and office operations and is expected to interpret and relay admissions procedures accurately to the public. Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail and work reliably and accurately with data for extended periods of time with no more than a 3% error rate is essential. Position requires application of extensive procedural knowledge and understanding of the academic and/or administrative policies of the University. Work is performed under general supervision. Employee is a member of the admissions team and has responsibilities in recruiting, admitting and yielding students.

Postdoctoral Fellows – 4 Positions

The University of Maine is launching a national search for Postdoctoral Sustainability Science Fellows. The successful candidates will join a new Sustainability Solutions Initiative (SSI) funded by a 5-year, $20 million NSF EPSCoR grant. SSI includes a team of 30 faculty from a range of disciplines and multiple academic institutions statewide. SSI’s transformative research program integrates coupled natural and human systems modeling, stakeholder engagement, and solutions-oriented research activities. Organized under a theme of landscape change, SSI supports multiple research projects focused on urbanization, forest ecosystem management, and climate change. Collectively, these projects speak to various sustainability science challenges and present a unique opportunity to advance the field of sustainability science. A major thrust of SSI is to produce a new generation of scientists who are equipped to work across disciplinary boundaries and adept at collaborative, problem-solving work that spans research and practice. SSI is recruiting a cohort of 4 Postdoctoral Fellows with tentative start dates ranging from February 2010 to April 2010. These initial appointments will be for a one-year duration with an opportunity for renewal. Concurrent SSI recruitment initiatives are seeking applications for 20 to 25 Doctoral Fellows and 4 faculty positions. 

Responsibilities: As a cohort, the 4 Postdoctoral Fellows will serve an integrative function to the overall SSI. We seek postdoctoral fellows who can align themselves with one or more ongoing research teams and are willing to assume broader, integrative research responsibilities. The postdoctoral fellows will be expected to participate in ongoing team projects and SSI-wide research activities, such as statewide sustainability problem assessments within the areas of urbanization, forest ecosystem management, climate change, and stakeholder engagement. Core research responsibilities will include planning and completion of research projects, preparation of manuscripts for publication in collaboration with SSI researchers, and presentation of research findings at public and professional meetings. The cohort will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of SSI curricula and mentoring programs for graduate and undergraduate students. 

Qualifications: A Ph.D. with specialization in biological or earth sciences, communication, engineering, mathematics, natural resource management, public policy, social sciences or a closely related technical or scientific discipline is required by the time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working on interdisciplinary research teams.

Full-time Advisor – Maine Educational Talent Search

Program Description

The Maine Educational Talent Search (METS) is a federally funded program designed to assist low-income, potential first-generation Maine youth who aspire to a postsecondary education level. The program staff provides academic, career, and educational counseling as well as technical assistance with the entire admissions and financial aid application process. The advising staff also provides motivational and academic support for program participant in grades 7-12. The METS Program provides services statewide. The program headquarters are located in Orono.

Service Area

The target area assigned to this position is located in Oxford Hills School district. The person hired for this position will be responsible for recruiting and providing services to a minimum of 205 eligible participants from within this service area.

Position Qualifications

A successful candidate for this position must have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s preferred, in counseling, education, social work or related area;
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with people from disadvantaged backgrounds in a setting similar to the Maine Educational Talent Search preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and work successfully with target populations, schools and community agencies in group and individual settings preferred;
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to work independently;
  • Ability to travel requiring a valid driver’s license.

Position Data

Standard work-year: August 1- May 31

Projected Start-date: December 15, 2009

Beginning Salary Range: $22,500-$26,000

Full-time Fringe Benefits Package

Position directly funded through August 2010. Current grant cycle runs through August 2011. Re-appointment contingent on external funding and job performance. Appropriate background checks will be required.

Assistant Extension Professor for Food Safety – Search Continued

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is seeking an Assistant Extension Professor for Food Safety (non-continuing contract faculty position) to work out of the Penobscot County office located in Bangor, Maine. This is a full-time, fiscal year position contingent upon funding and successful job performance.  The faculty member in this position will provide leadership for Cooperative Extension’s food safety programming.  The faculty member, in partnership with county and campus-based Extension staff and UMaine faculty, will develop or assist educational programming focused on food safety and food preservation. The position will address the wide spectrum of food safety needs of Maine small businesses and consumers. The position may conduct applied research and scholarship in collaboration with colleagues within Cooperative Extension, the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, and others. This faculty member will also assist with hands-on food preservation programming such as freezing, canning and drying foods.  This position will support the Eat Well Nutrition Education Program, Cooperative Extension’s limited-income nutrition education program, with 20% time related to work relevant to this target audience.

In order to develop a pool of qualified candidates for the purpose of filling future vacancies, the University of Maine Department of Public Safety is seeking applications for the position of Police Officer.

Minimum requirements include an Associate’s Degree or equivalent hours in a Bachelor’s Degree program, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to meet all requirements defined by the State of Maine for a Law Enforcement Officer license to practice, within one year of hire. Candidates will be required to complete a series of testing including written and oral examinations, a psychological interview, a background investigation, a physical, and a polygraph test.

If not previously certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, the applicant must take the ALERT test and a physical assessment test in order to meet the MCJA criteria for these. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to practice Community Policing in a culturally, racially, and academically diverse University community of student, faculty, and visitors, many from Maine but some coming from across the United States and throughout the world. Work schedules will vary and will include day, evening, midnight, weekend, and holiday work, as well as numerous special “extra” details such as duty at many athletic events. Officers interact regularly with the community, most often in a positive and supportive role, to improve their educational and living activities and opportunities at The University of Maine. Starting salary may be $16.82 to $18.31 per hour depending on Maine Criminal Justice Academy Certification. Head Field Hockey Coach Lecturer

Systems Manager Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research

The University of Maine invites applications for a professional position of Systems Manager, at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research, located in Franklin, Maine. Incumbent will be responsible for the continual operation of freshwater and seawater recirculating and flow-through culture systems and all associated support systems at the University’s Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) in Franklin, Maine. The Systems Manager will also be required to assist in design and construction of new aquaculture systems, develop and implement a facility wide maintenance program, provide technical support for various projects at the Center and assist with implementation of safety programs and training.

The successful applicant will require a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent in education, training and experience with a minimum of 3 years experience involving systems management of industrial scale farming, manufacturing or processing facilities such as aquaculture production facilities, waste water treatment plants or paper mills.  Librarian, Government Publications, Maps, GIS, and Microforms. Raymond H. Fogler Library, University of Maine, Orono seeks an experienced librarian to serve as department head and to administer and coordinate fulfillment of the legal responsibilities as a Tri-State Regional Federal Government Document Depository and to support the instructional, research, and public service functions of the University by providing collection management, public, and technical service for the past, present, and future acquisitions of United States federal, Canadian federal and provincial, and Agricultural Experiment Station publications. Also to manage the delivery of Geographic Information Systems services including development of numeric and spatial database and software collections, creation of GIS instructional materials and the delivery of campus GIS workshops. Prepares reports and library publications, including web pages. Supervises four support staff and four student employees.

 Required: ALA-accredited MLS and professional experience in an academic, or state, or public library with demonstrated experience with federal documents. Demonstrated leadership, management, and supervisory experience in a library. Demonstrated ability to manage programs, staff, and technology. Excellent oral and written communication skills for interpersonal, presentation, negotiation, and consensus-building. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. A willingness to travel within the Tri-State Region and to national conferences as needed or appropriate. Normally requiring a valid driver’s license. Must have authorization to work in the U.S.

 Preferred: Experience working collaboratively with libraries, other institutions, and with state and federal governments. Experience with GIS. Experience preparing materials for and teaching workshops.

 Raymond H. Fogler Library is the primary research library for the State of Maine. The University of Maine is the Land Grant University and Sea Grant College for the State of Maine. It is the flagship institution of the University of Maine System, offering bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. The University of Maine has approximately 11,900 students and 713 faculty. Dairy Herdsperson

The Dairy Herdsperson will manage the University of Maine’s Teaching and Research Dairy Herd. Establishes, adjusts, and maintains routines for daily care, feeding, milking, and cleaning of milking and replacement herd. Monitors herd health; diagnoses health problems, administers preventative and curative treatments, and vaccinations. Herd reproduction management; detects estrous, sire selection, and performs artificial insemination breeding. Develops and balances rations for milking and replacement animals. Maintains computerized herd record keeping system. Participates in milking and feeding rotations. Supervises, trains, and schedules student and temporary employees. Teaches and enforces proper safety and environmental practices. Participates in farm operations planning and meetings. Works with faculty, researchers, and lab coordinators to prepare animals for teaching and research use. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Typically has the education associated with a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of related work experience in Animal Science or other related fields. Previous experience in dairy herd management required. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills required. Ability to carry out physically demanding job tasks including lifting a minimum of 50 pounds required. Successful supervisory skills and farm safety knowledge preferred. Ability to travel, normally requiring a valid driver’s license.

The Dairy Herdsperson works in numerous environments. Work frequently performed outside in various weather conditions. Strong odors, dust, and dirt are frequently encountered. The finalist for this position must successfully complete a pre-employment and motor vehicle drivers’ license background check.

This is a full-time, represented Professional position with renewal contingent upon 4-H Foundation funding and successful job performance. The Executive Director will provide leadership and financial accountability in developing public and private resources to support the mission of the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation. As Executive Director of a public charitable foundation, fundraising and donor development are critical components of this position. The person in this position will conduct fundraising activities to support the endowment fund, annual campaign and special funds that support priority 4-H Youth Development Programs; work with the 4-H Foundation’s Board of Trustees to develop annual fundraising goals and a strategy for success in their achievement including oversight of the Foundation’s $2 million endowment fund and work in partnership with the 4-H Foundation’s Board of Trustees and the 4-H Program Leadership Team to create and monitor the annual budget.

Climate Modeler Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Climate Change Institute (CCI) at the University of Maine has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral scientist to study the impacts of regional climate change. The successful applicant will join an effort to use regional climate models to assess probabilistic climate change focusing on the northeastern United States. Candidates should have some experience running a Global Climate Model (GCM) and/or a Regional Climate Model (RCM), be literate in UNIX/Linux operating systems, a working knowledge of C, C++ and/or FORTRAN, and the ability to write proposals and translate results to the public. Candidates must have a PhD in atmospheric sciences, modeling, or any closely related field. Proposed start date is as soon as possible. The initial appointment is for two years with a possible extension of one year depending on performance and continued external funding.
